Unicorns & Thoroughbreds
1
Open the Unicorns & Thoroughbreds dashboard
Navigate to Stats & Insights in the left menu and select Unicorns & Thoroughbreds. This dashboard tracks the world's most successful private companies — Unicorns (valued above $1B) and Thoroughbreds (generating $100M+ in annual revenue) — giving you a comprehensive picture of where exceptional value is being created globally. You can also access it directly at app.dealroom.co/unicorns-thoroughbreds.
2
Explore cumulative growth and geographic breakdowns
The dashboard offers cumulative unicorn tracking over time, with geographic breakdowns so you can see where value concentrates by region or country. Use the customisable chart builder to filter by year range, geography, industry, company type, and specific investors — tailoring the view to your research focus.
3
Analyse founder networks and educational pipelines
Dig into the founder and employee network data to uncover "mafias" — alumni networks from successful companies who go on to build new high-performers. You can also identify which universities produced the founders of these elite companies, mapping the academic pipelines that feed into unicorn creation. Use website traffic trends to track momentum and market interest across these organisations.
Investor Power Law Ranking
1
Access the Power Law Ranking
The Power Law Ranking is a Dealroom Premium feature available in the Investors section. It evaluates venture capital investors based on portfolio performance using a proprietary scoring system, ranking VCs by successful outcomes — adjusted for investment stage. The earlier an investor identifies and backs a winner, the higher their score.
2
Understand what the ranking measures
The ranking tracks four tiers of portfolio outcomes:

Unicorns — portfolio companies that reached $1B+ valuation
$1B+ exits — companies acquired or IPO'd above $1B
$100M+ revenue companies — Thoroughbreds in the portfolio
$25M+ revenue companies — strong performers still scaling

Dealroom analysed over 22,000 investors with deal-by-deal analysis, offering unprecedented transparency into investor selection ability and portfolio trajectories.
💡
How to use the Power Law Ranking in your research
Use the Power Law Ranking to benchmark VC performance across stages and regions, identify emerging high-performing investors before they become household names, and guide strategic investor outreach. Explore regional rankings, view outcome distributions, and examine individual investor deal history. Higher scores indicate more high-tier outcomes adjusted for investment stage relevance — check regularly to track momentum shifts and evolving investor focus.
Startup Funnel
1
Find the Startup Funnel in Stats & Insights
The Startup Funnel is located under Stats & Insights in the left menu. It measures innovation ecosystems from the earliest startup creation signals all the way through to large-scale outcomes — giving you a full picture of how startups progress from founding to achieving unicorn status.
2
Read the funnel from top to bottom
The funnel is structured as a progression:

Founder Origins — where founders come from: universities, corporates, accelerators, and prior unicorns (revealing the talent pipelines feeding the ecosystem)
Newly Created Startups — the top of the funnel, showing ecosystem formation rate
Seed → Series A → Series B → Series C+ — funding stage progression showing how many startups advance through each round
Unicorns & Gigacorns — the tip of the funnel, showing how many companies ultimately reach $1B+ valuation

This progression makes it immediately visible how efficiently a given ecosystem converts early-stage startups into high-value outcomes.
3
Filter by location and sector to benchmark ecosystems
The Startup Funnel is fully interactive. Use the location filter to compare how different countries, cities, or regions convert startups to unicorns. Apply sector filters (e.g. Deep Tech, Generative AI, Sustainability) to understand which industries have the most efficient innovation pipelines. This is particularly powerful for ecosystem benchmarking — understanding which geographies are punching above their weight in producing breakthrough companies.
