Growth stage
Working for a pre-seed startup completely differs from working at a scale-up. One isn’t better than the other, but it's important to make explicit choices and know what you are getting into. The below chart shows how you can distinguish them on the platform.

Deep, frontier, hard tech
Deep Tech is the filter to use if you are looking for work involving scientific and engineering breakthroughs and discoveries. It includes areas such as Future of Computing (e.g. quantum computing, photonics tech, ai chips), novel energy (e.g. nuclear fusion, hydrogen, solid-state batteries, carbon removal), novel ai (e.g. generative AI, explainable and responsible AI, autonomous systems), space tech, synthetic biology and more.
Frontier tech is broader than Deep Tech, including companies using these novel technologies as applications without developing R&D on them. It includes Deep Tech, plus things like VR, AR, blockchain, autonomous tech, climate tech, robotics, space, and semiconductors.
Hard Tech is even broader. It includes Frontier Tech, plus notoriously “hard-to-crack” markets like Health and Energy and processes like Hardware and Manufacturing

Investor quality
The quality of the investors says a great deal about the startup's chances of success. This is especially true at the (pre)seed stage, where most startups fail, but the failure rate can range from 50% to 95%, depending on the investors. The Journey to Series A report shows that raising from top-tier investors is a decent predictor of startup survival.
Companies backed by selected top-tier early-stage investors: SV Angel, 500 Global, LocalGlobe, Kima, PointNine, Cherry, Founder Collective, First Round, Index, Accel, Lightspeed, A16Z, Sequoia, General Catalyst, Founders Fund, Khosla – or pick any investor of your choice.
