After a huge record (even bigger than global venture spike) in 2021, investment into Amsterdam startups is coming back down to earth in 2022. But while investment is down 75% year on year, H1 is already the second biggest yearly opening on record, with €698M raised.

Amsterdam’s top sector has long been fintech, and while it has still received the highest allocation of any sector in 2022, some of the fastest growing sectors have shown to be Security and Mobility, along with strong growth in Health and Edtech.

The overall value of public and private tech companies in Amsterdam has dipped slightly this year, impacted by global public market performance. But Amsterdam is still second by combined enterprise value among European hubs, behind just London, and ahead of Paris, Stockholm and Berlin. Amsterdam tech companies are worth a combine €227B as of June 2022.

While investment has pulled back overall, amid global economic uncertainty, Amsterdam-based VCs have continued to raise. Local investors are holding record levels of dry powder, having raised more (€972M) so far in 2022, than in any other full year on record.
