Petra Diamonds secures $20M lifeline for struggling Cullinan mine
What's the deal? Petra DiamondsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → (LSE:PDL) has secured at least $20 million in short-term funding against future diamond production, supporting operations at its Cullinan mine while it pursues refinancing or potential asset sales. An unnamed diamond industry group will provide revolving advance payments for all future run-of-mine production.
Why now? The funding follows a bruising September quarter. Revenue fell to $21 million from $30 million in the prior three months, and average realised diamond prices dropped to $63 per carat from $76, largely reflecting a weaker product mix.
What else is in the numbers? Net debt climbed to $348 million from $322 million at June-end, while unrestricted cash slipped to $7 million from $9 million. Petra's senior secured lender also agreed not to enforce specified defaults until the earlier of 12 months or full repayment of advances.
The job cuts: Petra completed a labour restructuring in October that eliminated 25 positions, targeting roughly $3 million in annual savings through variable cost reductions.
What could go wrong? The company's shares remain suspended after audit delays prevented it from publishing annual results by October 31. Petra intends to seek restoration of trading after publishing its audited accounts for the year ended June 30, 2026.
What's the endgame? Management expects Cullinan's product mix and grade to improve from November, following maintenance work and deliveries of critical mining equipment that began arriving in October. "The company will continue to focus on mining areas of the Cullinan Mine that have the maximum potential for high value stones," said chief executive Vivek Gadodia.
The signal: "The diamond sector remains at historic low levels, but with robust demand for high-value stones," Gadodia said, pointing to "a cautious but uneven bottoming" of the market towards the end of September. For Petra, the $20 million buys time to ride out the slump without locking in a long-term fix.
