What does it do? Mantic, founded by former Google DeepMind engineer Toby Shevlane and Ben Day, builds so-called superforecasters — AI systems designed to make predictions without human behavioural biases. It emerged from stealth just over a year ago.

Why now? The company made headlines by beating human forecasters in a competition, predicting events from tensions between Donald Trump and Elon Musk to Kemi Badenoch's removal as Conservative party leader. Its pitch lands as geopolitical shocks reshape economies at speed.

The signal: Investor appetite for AI forecasting reflects a broader bet that machines can outpace human judgement on long-term predictions. Microsoft's participation signals that even a niche category is drawing serious strategic capital.
