Baseten nears $2B round at up to $30B, more than double its June mark
What's the deal? AI inference startup Baseten is set to raise about $2 billion in a round that would value it at up to $30 billion, Bloomberg reports. Existing investor Sands Capital ManagementDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → is set to lead. The round comes in two tranches, one pricing the company at $26 billion and the other at $30 billion.
What does Baseten do? Founded in 2019, the San Francisco company sells software and computing capacity that lets businesses deploy and run AI models in production — a step known as inference. Its backers include Altimeter Capital, IVP, and Spark Capital.
Why now? The jump is sharp. In June, Baseten raised $1.5 billion at a $13 billion valuation, meaning its value could more than double in roughly four months. This week it released joey-1, an open decision model priced at a penny per million tokens, part of a push to sell tools for running AI in production.
The structure: In a tranched round, investors buy into the same company at two different prices. Venture firms have been using the format to push up AI startup valuations, Bloomberg reported on October 22.
What could go wrong? The terms are not final, and Baseten has not announced the round. The deal lands in a nervous market: AI stocks have sold off, and cloud providers including CoreWeave have faced tighter debt terms. Whether the $30 billion tranche closes at that price — or gets re-marked to the $26 billion level — is where inference demand gets tested.
The signal: Investors are piling into inference, the work of running models once training is done. Baseten's closest rival, Fireworks AI, raised $1.5 billion at a $17.5 billion valuation in July. With spending on inference chips and compute expected to eclipse training, backers are treating inference capacity — not foundation-model IP — as the scarcer bet.
