New fund

Creandum closes $750M fund, its largest, to back early-stage startups

What's the deal? Creandum, the Stockholm-based venture firm behind Spotify, Klarna, and Lovable, has closed Creandum VIII, a €668 million ($750 million) fund to back early-stage technology startups from pre-seed to Series A. It is the firm's largest fund to date, roughly a third larger than the €500 million Fund VII that closed in June 2024.

The plan: Creandum will make about 30 investments over the next two years, splitting the fund evenly between new bets and follow-on rounds. The firm is keeping its generalist strategy, though partners expect AI to drive much of the opportunity.

Who backed it? The fund drew commitments from roughly 30 institutional investors across Europe and the US, including university endowments, pension funds, and charitable foundations. It is now closed to new investors.

Why now? "The biggest companies get founded when the ground is shifting," the firm said, pointing to AI reshaping software and enterprise markets. Creandum notes that one in six companies it has backed has reached a valuation of $1 billion or more.

Going global: The firm is pushing deeper into the US, tripling its San Francisco team over the past two years. The goal is to reach American founders and help European companies enter the US market — a shift from "Europe's leading early-stage firm into a global early-stage specialist."

What could go wrong? The bigger fund raises the stakes. Splitting half of $750 million across 30 new investments implies average initial cheques near $12.5 million — above the early-stage norm, demanding larger exits to deliver returns.

The signal: European venture fundraising reached $14.9 billion across 111 funds through September, and Fund VIII alone accounts for about 5% of that. With capital clustering in large AI and defence deals and smaller managers struggling, Creandum's raise shows LPs still back established firms with a proven track record and access to capital on both sides of the Atlantic.
