What does it build? Its cameras resolve detail below the diffraction limit — the resolution floor a lens aperture imposes on conventional optics. By sorting light by shape rather than brightness, they cut the aperture and compute needed to classify distant objects. Company simulations indicate the approach can resolve features up to 20 times smaller.
Why now? The investment follows seven months of progress since the round's January 2026 first close. DiffraQTion completed on-sky demonstrations at a partner observatory, advanced its DARPA Direct-to-Phase-II SBIR into a second option period, and won a NASA SBIR Phase I in orbital debris tracking plus NASA's $100,000 Space to Soil Challenge.
What's the endgame? The funding takes the technology into its first fielded camera, with flight heritage planned through a hosted payload on a partner spacecraft. The method is passive, drawing on quantum estimation theory rather than quantum computing — no qubits or cryogenics.
Who's steering it? DiffraQTion appointed Peter Kazlas as head of engineering to lead the effort. The signal: At over $10 million, DiffraQTion's pre-seed lands above the 95th percentile for US AI seed-stage rounds all-time. The dual backing from Lockheed Martin and Sumitomo signals appetite for the same physics to serve both defense reconnaissance and commercial markets — as Presidio's Ross Leav noted, "the same physics advantage applies whether the camera is observing the sky or the earth."
