QD Vision, Inc. operated in the advanced materials and display technology sector, specializing in the development and manufacturing of quantum dot (QD) optical components. The company was founded in 2004 as a spin-out from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Its founding team included Vladimir Bulović, Seth Coe-Sullivan, and Justin Zimmer, researchers from MIT who leveraged their expertise in nanotechnology to commercialize quantum dot technology.

The core of QD Vision's business was its proprietary quantum dot technology, which was marketed under the Color IQ™ brand. These semiconductor nanocrystals were engineered to emit light at very specific and pure wavelengths when excited, resulting in enhanced color performance for displays. The primary application for this technology was in the liquid crystal display (LCD) market. By integrating a thin tube of QD Vision's quantum dots into the backlight unit of an LCD, manufacturers could achieve a significantly wider color gamut, approaching the performance of more expensive OLED displays but at a lower cost. This made the technology particularly attractive for high-end televisions, monitors, and other consumer electronics.

QD Vision's business model revolved around supplying its Color IQ™ components to major display and television manufacturers. The company targeted original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) like Sony, Philips, and TCL, who integrated the technology into their product lines to offer superior color accuracy and vibrancy as a key selling point. This B2B approach positioned QD Vision as a critical component supplier within the global display supply chain. Over its history, the company secured substantial venture capital funding to scale its research, development, and manufacturing capabilities. A significant milestone was the commercial launch of televisions featuring its Color IQ™ technology. After years of operation and successfully bringing its product to market, QD Vision was acquired by Samsung in 2016, a move that underscored the strategic importance of quantum dot technology in the future of display manufacturing.
