What's the endgame? TerraBlaster uses laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) in rugged sensors dragged through the soil by a tractor or ATV at a depth of around six inches. It maps pH plus levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and other nutrients in real time, guiding more precise fertiliser application.
Why now? Following testing in Iowa last year, the company is running demos with growers and retailers across the Midwest this fall. Those learnings will feed into systems delivered in spring 2027, when commercial operations begin. Commitments for its first systems are already in place ahead of a pre-sale opening this fall.
What's the pitch? Traditional soil sampling is slow and labour-intensive, with lab results returning several days later, says cofounder and chief executive officer Jorge Heraud. Most farmers sample at 2.5-acre grids, masking variability that leads to over- or under-application of fertiliser. "With our technology, there's no reason to suffer suboptimal yields by applying nutrients to a field based on low-resolution or old measurements," Heraud says.
