01 · Background

Who Ireland Strategic Investment Fund is.

Historical Background
The Ireland Strategic Investment Fund (ISIF) was established in 2014, managed and controlled by the National Treasury Management Agency (NTMA). It was created following the dissolution of the National Pensions Reserve Fund (NPRF), with the legislative framework provided by the NTMA (Amendment) Act 2014.
Source of Capital
ISIF is a sovereign development fund, meaning its capital originates from the Irish government. The fund's initial capital came from the assets of its predecessor, the National Pensions Reserve Fund.
Major Events
The most significant event in ISIF's history is its formation from the National Pensions Reserve Fund (NPRF). The NPRF's mandate was changed, and its assets were transferred to establish ISIF with a new focus on domestic investment.
Allocation Strategy
ISIF's mandate is to invest on a commercial basis to support economic activity and employment in Ireland. The fund invests across various asset classes, including private equity, venture capital, and infrastructure, with a clear preference for opportunities within Ireland. A key strategic priority for ISIF is supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy, with significant capital pledged to climate and green technology businesses. The fund also aims to attract additional private investment into its portfolio companies.
