Erste Group joins Poland's €680M fund of funds in second close
What's the deal? Erste GroupDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and Erste Bank PolskaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → have invested in the Innovate PL Fund of Funds, the centrepiece of Poland's state-backed "Innovate Poland" initiative. The two institutions joined at the fund's second close, becoming the first privately owned, listed banks to back the vehicle. Managed by PFR Ventures, the fund targets total commitments of nearly 3 billion złoty — about €680 million.
How the fund works: Innovate PL does not invest directly in companies. Instead it backs roughly 20 private equity, private debt, and venture capital funds, with a target split of 60, 20, and 20%. It is supported by Polish development bank BGKDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and the European Investment Fund.
Erste has not disclosed how much it committed. PFR Ventures caps its own stake at 40% of any target fund, so the rest must come from other backers — making private capital like Erste's central to hitting the €680 million goal. A first close of close to €400 million was reported in August.
Why now? The investment follows Erste's biggest-ever foreign deal: in January it closed the purchase of 49% of Santander Bank PolskaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and 50% of its fund arm for about €7 billion, financed without a capital increase. The lender, Poland's third-largest with over 8% market share, now trades as Erste Bank PolskaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →.
What's the endgame? Chief executive officer Peter Bosek has framed Poland as Europe's most important growth market — 38 million people, a bank sector less saturated than Western Europe's, and heavy spending on defence, energy, and infrastructure driven by its position on NATO's eastern flank. The fund investment extends that bet into equity financing for firms banks cannot serve with loans alone.
"If Europe wants more champions, we must create the conditions for their growth," Bosek said (translated from German). "Poland has the talent, the ambition, and the economic strength to produce more companies that can establish themselves successfully internationally."
Michał Gajewski, chief executive officer of Erste Bank Polska, said the stake shows "that Poland is a strategic market for the group and that it has long-term plans for the country."
The signal: Erste's move shows state-backed vehicles pulling in institutional capital in what industry reports call a tough fundraising climate. By offering a ready-made framework through PFR, BGKDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, and the EIF, Poland is drawing listed banks into venture and private markets — and Erste is signalling it means to stay beyond lending in its new core market.
