Walter Isaacson on TBPN: Tesla and SpaceX will eventually merge, and Musk's Cursor deal was necessity, not M&A

The Roadster and a Tesla-SpaceX merger Isaacson called the Roadster demo "a bit of a parlor trick thing" but said the production car "is going to be awesome", crediting designer Franz von Holzhausen. He recalled Musk's son Saxon asking "Dad, why doesn't the future look like the future?" He said the car "is almost a joint product of Tesla and SpaceX", given its thruster-based propulsion, adding: "I would guess Tesla and SpaceX are going to merge."
Twitter, Cursor and building end to end Pushing back on the idea that Musk has become a dealmaker, Isaacson said buying Twitter was "a weird impulse" and that the Cursor acquisition was "a pretty smart acquisition" because "keeping up in the world of frontier AI models is quite difficult". But he said Musk still wants "to build it myself end to end", asking: "why would you be building Terafab to make your own microchips if you're into deal making rather than physical product making?" He also cautioned against assuming Musk "has become less mercurial".
Agentic AI and the Steve Jobs school Isaacson contrasted Steve Jobs' view of the computer as "a bicycle for the mind" that "would augment, not replace your creativity" with the push toward autonomous AI, tracing the debate from Ada Lovelace to Alan Turing in a new introduction to The Innovators. On today's AI rivalries, he said competition is healthy and "one of the things we have to do is keep that competition going. In other words, have antitrust." He said his next book is on Marie Curie, and that he is interested in how labs teach models like Claude "why" rather than just rules.
