Aussie Broadband bets on energy-bundled growth after AGL telco takeover
What's the deal? Aussie BroadbandDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → (ASX:ABB) is migrating around 350,000 broadband and mobile services onto its own platforms after acquiring AGL's telecommunications business. The deal, agreed in February and completed in June 2026, was paid for in new shares, with the energy retailer taking a stake in Aussie Broadband that can grow if performance targets are met.
What the deal added: The acquired business brought a retail customer base spanning broadband, mobile, and fixed voice. By its August results, Aussie Broadband had migrated more than 116,000 broadband and 30,000 mobile services, with the full transfer expected to finish in Q2 FY27.
What's the endgame? The strategic prize is AGL's five-year marketing partnership, which hands Aussie access to the energy retailer's large customer base. Energy and telco are both monthly household bills, so bundling them can lower the cost of winning customers and reduce churn.
Why now? The acquisition sits within a rapid scale-up. Aussie completed its More and Tangerine migration in June and reported FY26 underlying EBITDA up 19.6% to US$107M, with FY27 guidance of US$132.6M–US$139.1M.
Alongside the integration, Aussie Broadband has expanded its operations in Western Australia, broadening its reach as it beds down the larger customer base.
What could go wrong? Migration is the hardest part of any telco deal: billing, provisioning, and mobile numbers must transfer cleanly, and disruption risks pushing customers to rivals. Management flagged some expected churn but said the process was progressing well. The long runway suggests Aussie is prioritising a smooth experience over speed.
The signal: The deal lifts Aussie Broadband into the top tier of national broadband providers, behind only the large incumbents. Scale matters because wholesale costs are largely set nationally, so a bigger base spreads fixed costs further. The real test is converting the energy channel into sustained growth once migration is done.
