TerraFlow acquires Houston battery startup FlowCellutions to boost flow-battery diagnostics
What's the deal? Katy-based TerraFlow EnergyDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has acquired Houston battery technology startup FlowCellutionsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, the companies announced in November. Terms were not disclosed.
FlowCellutions keeps its name under the tagline "A TerraFlow Energy Company," with founder Becca Segel now running it as president. The startup specialises in electrochemical sensing, diagnostics, analytics, and testing that reveal what is happening inside a flow battery.
What's the endgame? TerraFlow, founded in 2024, builds long-duration energy storage and power infrastructure for data centers, industrial sites, utilities, and other large power users. The deal adds diagnostic and sensing capability rather than an installed project base, supporting its push to commercialise vanadium flow batteries.
Why now? "As we move from developing these systems to deploying them at commercial scale, understanding performance at a deeper level matters," said TerraFlow chief executive officer Jon Parrella. FlowCellutions' platform targets data centers and heavy power users, aiming to cut operating costs, prevent downtime, and extend battery life from about seven years to more than 30.
Segel founded FlowCellutions in 2022. A Greentown LabsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → member, it raised more than $2 million in non-dilutive funding and received $1.5 million from the National Science Foundation earlier this year. It is also a finalist in InnovationMap's 2026 Houston Innovation Awards.
"Joining TerraFlow gives us the opportunity to apply that work at a much larger scale," Segel said.
The signal: The acquisition lands amid a crowded commercialisation race for storage that can run longer than lithium-ion, with rival Certain Energy raising a round in August. In August, TerraFlow signed an MOU with Shoals Technologies tied to a deployment ambition of up to 5 GW annually, though Shoals said that work remained in engineering and revenue was not expected before 2027. The deal is a strategic technology addition, not proof that TerraFlow's scale-up plans are on track.
