YC-backed Firstwork raises $15M to automate frontline onboarding

What's the endgame? Firstwork's AI agents target the gap between a job offer and an employee's first shift — a phase when many frontline hires drop out. The agents move candidates from offer through compliance, text or call them as they upload documents, and follow up after shifts to catch problems before workers leave.

Why now? Founder Vardhan Kapoor, former head of strategy and operations at Deliveroo, recruited tens of thousands of riders and took delivery shifts himself. "There's a great deal of mess about losing the most suitable candidates, with the candidates themselves getting lost," he said, citing the tangle of municipal, state, and client requirements.

Europe faces steep labour gaps: the World Health Organization expects a shortfall of 950,000 health workers by 2030, and the International Road Transport Union counts roughly 502,000 unfilled truck driver positions. Firstwork integrates with existing HR, payroll, and screening software, and says each day of delay raises the odds a candidate takes another job.

Who's behind it? Kapoor founded Firstwork in 2024; co-founder Shubham Choudhary was a director of engineering at Deel and helped Rippling expand globally. The company went through Y Combinator's Summer 2024 batch and now has about 45 employees. Deel, valued at $17.3 billion in October 2025, is both a customer and, through Deel Ventures, an investor.

What about expansion? Firstwork is setting up a London headquarters to support European clients as it grows across the region, funding a sharper geographic focus alongside its product.

What could go wrong? Agentic HR automation is an emerging category with no clear leader, and established HR-tech players are adding AI through acquisitions. Rivals are well funded too: Barcelona-based Orbio raised $21 million in June, and workforce platform Sona raised $45 million in April.

The signal: Firstwork's $15 million round sits in the 34th percentile for deal size, placing it mid-pack among recent raises. Its narrow focus on moving workers from offer to first shift could set it apart — but its significance will hinge on proving measurable gains in worker activation and retention, not just faster paperwork.
