Relevance Ventures backs Aqua Medical's diabetes device play in Series B

What's the deal? Relevance VenturesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has led a multimillion-dollar Series B round in Aqua Medical, a clinical-stage medical technology company developing a minimally invasive endoscopic treatment for Type 2 diabetes. The deal was announced on September 23, 2026.

What's the endgame? Aqua is building a device-based alternative to drugs and invasive surgery for metabolic disease. Its investigational Proximal Intestinal Mucosal Ablation (PIMA) procedure uses a proprietary radiofrequency vapor ablation platform.

What's the money for? Proceeds will fund completion of Aqua's US RESTORE-1 pilot study and preparations for a planned pivotal trial, subject to regulatory clearance. RESTORE-1 is evaluating PIMA at US clinical sites under an FDA-approved Investigational Device Exemption.

The product is FDA-cleared for coagulation and ablation in the gastrointestinal tract; its use for Type 2 diabetes remains under clinical investigation.

Why it matters: Type 2 diabetes affects roughly 589 million people worldwide and drives more than $1 trillion in annual healthcare spending, including about $327 billion in the US, per figures Aqua cited. The disease affects Native Americans at twice the national average.

As part of the deal, Dean Newton, chairman and general partner of Relevance Ventures, joined Aqua Medical's board. Relevance is one of the few independently owned Native American venture firms in the US.

The signal: Relevance framed the investment as proof that Native-owned capital can back treatments for challenges that hit Native communities hardest. "This is a significant human need with an opportunity for innovation to materially change outcomes and people's lives," Newton said.
