Fundraise

OpenAI nears $30B round at $1.25T valuation, led by Coatue and UAE investors

What's the deal? OpenAI is close to raising $30 billion in a late-stage round that would value the company at up to $1.25 trillion, before the new money. Coatue Management and investors from the United Arab Emirates are set to lead the financing, with the company aiming to secure signatures by the end of next week.

Why now? The round is being positioned as an "opportunistic" bridge to provide capital while OpenAI finalises plans for a possible initial public offering. UAE investors first approached the company in September; terms are still being finalised and could change.

What's the endgame? OpenAI is simultaneously negotiating a separate deal with the UAE for more computing capacity. That links the fundraise to the enormous infrastructure demands of its business — the company has told investors it plans to spend $600 billion on compute by 2030.

By the numbers: This is a rapid follow-on. In March, OpenAI closed a record $122 billion round at an $852 billion post-money valuation, backing from Amazon, SoftBankDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, and Nvidia. The new deal, if completed, would make OpenAI the most valuable private company ever.

What could go wrong? The valuation has already slipped. Earlier in October, OpenAI pitched a fixed $1.4 trillion pre-money price to backers including BlackRock and UAE fund MGXDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → — roughly $150 billion above the figure now being sought. A smaller close or a slip into November would signal the markdown wasn't deep enough to clear the book.

The signal: The round ranks in the top 1% of late-stage natural-language-processing deals in the US over the past four years, underscoring how quickly private-market AI valuations are climbing. With Gulf sovereign funds pricing compute access as a condition of anchor investment, capital and infrastructure are now negotiated as one.
