Helvetia Baloise raises $340M in 20-year subordinated bond

What's the deal? Helvetia Baloise, Switzerland's largest multi-line insurer, has placed a US$252.1M (roughly $340 million) subordinated bond on the Swiss capital market. UBS and Zürcher Kantonalbank acted as joint lead managers. The single tranche carries a coupon of 2.2875%, runs for 20 years, and is first callable in 2036.

Why now? The Basel-based group said proceeds will fund general corporate purposes, including refinancing. The issuance supports what chief financial officer Matthias Henny called the "proactive management of our capital structure."

What's the endgame? Henny said the placement lets the group "maintain financial flexibility while optimising our funding profile." Helvetia Baloise framed the deal as evidence of continued access to the Swiss market and investor confidence in its financial strength and disciplined capital management.

By the numbers: The raise sits in the upper tier of comparable deals, ranking around the 12th percentile from the top by amount. Helvetia Baloise serves about 13 million customers across eight European markets, with more than 20,000 employees.

The signal: For a large listed insurer, tapping subordinated debt at a sub-2.3% coupon signals both steady market access and appetite for long-dated Swiss paper. It reflects how established groups are managing capital structures well ahead of call dates rather than waiting on refinancing pressure.
