Cohere targets $5.01B Series E in record Canadian raise

What's the deal? Cohere has announced the initial close of a Series E round targeting US$5.13B (roughly $5.01 billion), which would value the Canadian AI company at US$26.2B. Why it matters: If completed, the raise would be the largest private financing ever by a Canadian technology company. It sits in the 99th percentile of all-time Series E rounds for deep-learning companies in Canada.

One caveat: This is an initial close, not a done deal. Cohere has not disclosed how much is committed so far or when the round will close, so the headline figure should not be read as capital already secured.

What's the endgame? Cohere builds sovereign AI for regulated industries and governments — markets seeking more control over their data, infrastructure, and deployment. Chief financial officer Francois Chadwick said the funding will "advance our modelling and product roadmap, develop fully verticalized AI solutions for regulated industries, and invest in long-term compute infrastructure."

The numbers: Cohere ended the third quarter of 2026 with 165% year-over-year growth in annual recurring revenue. Its customer base grew 20-fold over the past year to 300, including Aston Martin Aramco, Bell Canada, FujitsuDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, RBC, and TD Bank.

Where it's growing: Chadwick said Cohere will "continue to meaningfully scale across North America, EMEA, and APAC to meet growing customer demand." The Schwarz tie-up anchors the European push: following Cohere's combination with Germany's Aleph Alpha, Schwarz aims to host the company's models in its sovereign STACKITDealroom has a profile for this one. What Schwarz says: "Digital sovereignty has become a strategic imperative for global competitiveness," said Christian Müller, chief executive officer of Schwarz DigitsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, whose division recently committed billions to data centre capacity in Germany.

The signal: The raise reflects a wider sovereign-AI funding race, as governments and enterprises seek alternatives they can control. France's Mistral raised €3 billion in September at a valuation above €21 billion. With a government stake and a European infrastructure partner, Cohere is positioning itself as the regulated-industry option — though the open close leaves the final figure unconfirmed.
