China's Sunrise doubles valuation to $3B in four months with US$275M raise

What's the deal? Chinese GPU maker Sunrise has raised a fresh US$275M in a late-stage round, lifting its post-money valuation to roughly US$2.75B. The round drew industrial investors including Charoen Pokphand Group, Andon HealthDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, Infore Environment, and Tongcheng Travel, alongside state-backed PICC Equity and CCB Equity and financial backers such as Janchor PartnersDealroom has a profile for this one. Why now? The raise comes just four months after Sunrise closed a 1 billion-yuan-plus round in April, which valued it above US$1.38B. In under six months, its valuation has nearly doubled. Since spinning out of SenseTime in late 2024, Sunrise has raised close to US$825M.

What's the endgame? Sunrise builds inference chips. Its January 2026 chip, the S3, bets on inference efficiency, cost, and supply certainty, dropping high-bandwidth memory (HBM) in favour of low-power LPDDR to cut costs and reduce reliance on constrained overseas supply chains.

The team: Though independent for barely a year, the chip team has existed for years. When SenseTime hived off its high-cost, long-cycle chip unit, co-founder Xu Bing became chairman; co-CEO Wang Yong previously worked as a core architect at AMDDealroom has a profile for this one. Why the jump? By mid-2026, AI compute demand has shifted from training to inference. Agents now enter production at scale, with a single task triggering dozens of model calls and round-the-clock token generation. Open-source releases this summer — Kimi K3, MiniMax H3, and DeepSeek-V4 — accelerated demand for AI coding, video generation, and office tools.

What could go wrong? Sunrise says its innovation is only half done. Whether its technology holds up in large-scale delivery, and whether its per-million-token cost curve falls as expected, remains for the market to decide. It declined to comment further on the raise.

The signal: The round ranks near the top of comparable deals — around the 95th percentile among late-stage semiconductor rounds in China over the past four years. With Moore Threads, MetaX, and BirenDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → recently listing, and EnflameDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and Kunlun queued up, inference compute remains a bottleneck in China's AI supply chain — and capital keeps pouring in.
