Fusion's funding boom: a record 2026 as capital piles into the frontier

What's the deal?

Capital is piling into private-sector fusion in 2026. A ranking compiled by FusionX of the ten fusion companies that have raised the most in 2026 year-to-date (equity and non-dilutive, ex-debt) shows nine-figure rounds now spread right across the field — a sign that investors increasingly treat commercial fusion as an engineering race rather than a science experiment.

Who's raising:

Commonwealth Fusion Systems sets the pace with a fresh $1 billion round — which it calls the largest single, fully-funded round in private-sector fusion since its own $1.8 billion Series B in 2021, taking its total to $4 billion since 2018. But the more telling story is the breadth beneath it. Germany's Proxima Fusion has raised $468 million (plus $941 million committed), Helion Energy $465 million, and China's ENN Fusion $300 million. Germany's Focused Energy and the US's Shine Technologies each took $240 million, with China's Dongsheng Fusion ($156 million), Canada's General Fusion and the US's Inertia ($150 million each) and China's Startorus Fusion ($143 million) rounding out the top ten.

A widening map:

The list spans three continents and every major confinement approach — magnetic (tokamaks and spherical tori), magneto-inertial and inertial. The US and Germany anchor the West while a cluster of well-funded Chinese startups — ENN Fusion, Dongsheng and Startorus — signals how fast China is building its own fusion base. Backers now range from deep-tech VCs to pension funds, sovereign wealth funds and industrial corporates writing nine-figure cheques.

What's the money for?

Broadly, the same thing across the field: moving from physics validation to hardware. CFS, for one, is funding supply-chain and manufacturing build-out plus design work for ARC, its planned power plant — and CEO Bob Mumgaard has said further capital in the "billion-dollar class" will still be needed before construction is fully funded. Expect similar capital intensity from the rest as demonstration devices give way to grid-scale plants.

The signal:

On FusionX's read, magnetic confinement is the best-funded approach heading into the second half of 2026, with CFS's US tokamak and Proxima 's European stellarator out ahead of the pack. The depth of the 2026 ranking shows a whole sector maturing — and doing so globally.
