Great British Energy takes 10% ITM Power stake with £40M equity injection

What's the deal? Great British EnergyDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, the UK's state-owned energy body, acquired roughly a 10% stake in electrolyser manufacturer ITM Power during the second quarter of 2026, injecting £40 million in fresh equity. A further £46.5 million from the UK Department for Energy Security and Net ZeroDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → followed on 9 July 2026. All of it is earmarked for the Chronos automated production line in Sheffield.

Why now? Government backing has become a recurring theme across European hydrogen plays as private capital grows wary of long payback periods and execution risk. In ITM Power's case, state support has shifted from grants to direct equity — a structural change that alters the financing equation but not the commercial reality.

What's the endgame? The Chronos line, built on the existing Trident platform with advanced automation and cleanroom capability, is designed to deliver up to 1GW of electrolyser stacks annually once fully operational. Beyond Sheffield, ITM Power is working with ProtiumDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → on the 15MW Cromarty hydrogen project in the Scottish Highlands, with a final investment decision set for December 2026. Talks with Germany's Stablegrid Group cover two projects totalling 710MW of electrolyser capacity.

What could go wrong? The company continues to post negative operating and free cash flows, supported by a relatively low debt burden. Its shares traded at €1.32 in mid-July 2026, nearly 15% lower over the preceding 30 days and 48% below the 29 May 2026 high of €2.58. The UK can fund a factory; it cannot manufacture conviction among traders.

Analysts split. BerenbergDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → rates the stock a buy at 200 pence, citing the RheinmetallDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → partnership and Giga-PtX project as "a meaningful growth opportunity." Goldman SachsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → maintains a sell. The broker consensus sits at just 131 pence, barely above the current price, with targets ranging from £1.10 to £2.00.

The signal: At a market capitalisation of roughly €932 million, ITM Power is no micro-cap, yet it trades like one — a binary bet on whether Chronos ramps and whether Cromarty passes its December 2026 investment decision. That milestone is the next concrete test of whether state money can convert into commercial proof.
