Skillsoft offloads Global Knowledge for $20M to bet on AI skills platform
What's the deal? Skillsoft (NYSE: SKIL) has completed the sale of its Global KnowledgeDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → instructor-led training business to an affiliate of Enduring VenturesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → for a headline $20 million. The company expects only about $5 million to $8 million in net proceeds after cash divested and transaction costs.
What's the endgame? Skillsoft wants a simplified portfolio focused entirely on its AI-native skills management platform, which helps organisations track and act on shifting workforce skills. The two firms will keep a commercial partnership, so Skillsoft customers retain access to instructor-led training and Global Knowledge customers gain access to Skillsoft's platform and content.
Why now? "This transaction removes a layer of complexity so we can put all our resources behind our platform," said chief executive officer Ron Hovsepian. Skillsoft is under financial pressure and re-centring on a higher-margin, software-led offering.
What could go wrong? The proceeds are modest. Skillsoft is selling an asset it acquired in the 2021 combination that valued Global Knowledge at roughly $233 million — a steep repricing that underscores how much the services business has faded.
The signal: The divestiture fits a wider pattern of learning-tech and software groups narrowing toward AI-driven products while shedding lower-growth services. Skillsoft's move stands out mainly for its small scale and the limited cash it raises — portfolio cleanup rather than a transformative deal.
