Varma adds $40M to quantum scaleup IQM ahead of Helsinki listing

What's the deal? Finnish pension insurer Varma has invested a further $40 million in IQM, the quantum computing company it has backed since 2022. Varma called the follow-on capital a sign of "strong confidence" in IQM's technology, leadership, and long-term growth prospects.

What does IQM do? Founded in 2018 and based in Espoo, Finland, IQM develops and manufactures quantum computers alongside related software and services. It has delivered systems to research institutes, universities, and corporate customers across several countries, ranking among Europe's best-known quantum firms.

Why now? The investment lands as IQM prepares to list on the Helsinki stock exchange. It also follows IQM's $320 million Series B in late 2025, which pushed the company to unicorn status.

What's the money for? IQM has committed over €40 million to expand its Espoo production facility, aiming to lift cleanroom capacity toward roughly 30 quantum computers per year. The company is pursuing fault-tolerant, error-corrected systems by 2030.

For Varma, the deal fits a domestic direct-investment strategy focused on growth companies with international potential. "IQM has become one of Europe's leading quantum technology companies," said portfolio manager Juho Taskinen, adding that the firm operates in a market expected to grow sharply as commercial quantum applications spread.

The signal: Varma's follow-on is notable less for its size than for what it reflects — large pension funds leaning into European deep-tech, and treating quantum computing as a strategic industrial pillar for Finland and the EU.
