FTC clears Musk to buy optical startup Mesh, built by SpaceX alumni

What's the deal? The Federal Trade Commission has cleared Elon Musk to acquire Mesh Optical Technologies, a startup founded by three former SpaceX engineers.

Mesh builds optical transceivers, devices that convert electrical signals into light so data moves between servers and GPUs faster and with less power than copper connections.

The startup came out of stealth in February 2026 with a $50 million Series A led by Thrive Capital. Its co-founders previously built the optical links that connect thousands of Starlink satellites.

Why now? The Federal Trade Commission granted early termination of its antitrust review, fast-tracking a process that usually takes 30 days. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Founded in 2025, Mesh marks one of the quickest paths from launch to acquisition by one of the world's most valuable companies.

The deal fills a strategic gap. SpaceX has signed compute agreements with Anthropic, Google, and Reflection AI worth more than $80 billion through 2029, turning its Memphis complex into one of the largest third-party compute platforms in the world.

But latency and aging network infrastructure limited those facilities for SpaceX's own AI training, forcing it to rent capacity to outside tenants instead.

What it means. Acquiring the team that solved Starlink's inter-satellite links gives SpaceX in-house expertise on a problem it has historically outsourced to suppliers like Broadcom and Coherent.

Whether it deploys the technology in Memphis or in future data centers — including the orbital compute infrastructure discussed with Anthropic — remains unclear.

The signal: Optical transceivers determine how fast chips inside a data center can talk to each other, a bottleneck that grows more acute as AI clusters scale to hundreds of thousands of chips. Mesh's flagship product, the Alpha C1, transmits data at more than one terabit per second. By buying the hardware rather than renting it, Musk is betting that owning the full stack is the edge in the AI compute race.
