Trase raises $107M seed for healthcare and defense AI

What's the deal? Trase, an AI operating system company, has raised $107 million in seed funding led by Arch Venture Partners, chief executive officer Grant Verstandig told Axios Pro exclusively.

Red Cell PartnersDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → also joined the round. Trase has now raised $117.5 million in total.

The McLean, Virginia-based startup builds infrastructure for AI agents in highly regulated industries like healthcare and defense.

Why now? Trase is betting customers will use multiple foundation models from different developers, and it wants to be the connective tissue tying together data, models, and expertise.

It has already developed around 200 AI use cases. In healthcare, its agents operate within Duke Health's Division of Cardiology, automating faxes and prescription refills.

The company plans to be in market for more than $125 million in Series A funding later this year.

What could go wrong? Selling infrastructure is tricky. As Verstandig puts it: "Customers don't buy infrastructure, ultimately they buy very specific use cases with discernible ROI [and] outcomes."

To address that, Trase will pursue tuck-in acquisitions aligned to proving out agentic AI.

In healthcare, it is open to deals that help it vertically integrate. In defense, it will chase horizontal deals to compete for large contracts across government agencies.

The signal: A $107 million seed round is unusually large for an early-stage company, signalling investor conviction that regulated sectors need a dedicated layer to deploy AI agents safely. Backing from Arch Venture Partners and Red Cell Partners, both investment funds, gives Trase the runway to chase tuck-in acquisitions before its planned $125 million-plus Series A later this year.
