Founded in 2020, JiMED builds a device that uses electrodes implanted inside the skull to capture high-precision brainwave data. AI then analyses those signals, letting patients control external devices through thought alone — no physical movement required.
The technology aims to help people in a "locked-in state," where consciousness and sensation remain intact but communication and movement are severely impaired due to neurological disease or trauma.
Why now? Japan's Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) recently accepted JiMED's clinical trial notification. That regulatory green light clears the path for the company to begin its ALS trial before the end of 2026, making the fresh capital timely.
KII, established in 2015 to commercialise university research, has been backing academia-born startups with its impact fund since 2023. The fund focuses on measurable social outcomes alongside financial returns — a mandate that aligns neatly with JiMED's mission.
What could go wrong? Implantable BCI remains a nascent field globally, with only a handful of companies — most notably Neuralink and Synchron — running human trials. Regulatory timelines for invasive neural devices can stretch unpredictably, and recruiting ALS patients for trials introduces its own complexities.
JiMED also faces the challenge of proving long-term safety and reliability of a wireless implant inside the skull — a high bar for any medical device, especially one without established reimbursement pathways in Japan.

JiMED's ability to secure PMDA trial approval before scaling its funding also suggests a regulatory-first strategy that could give it a credibility edge as it seeks international partners.
