About JiMED

JiMED is a Japan-based medtech company, a spin-off from Osaka University research, that develops wireless implantable brain-computer interfaces (wiBCIs) for patients with severe neurological conditions such as ALS and spinal cord injuries. Its mission is to give fully locked-in people a way to communicate and move again, so that they can reconnect with the world and keep their dignity.

The approach is an invasive neurotechnology system in which an implanted device reads signals from the brain and AI decodes them, so that a patient can operate a computer, a communication device or assistive equipment. The interface is wireless and implanted, rather than an external cap or a tethered connector, and is aimed at patients who have lost most voluntary movement and at the clinicians in neurology and neurorehabilitation who care for them.

JiMED is moving from development towards clinical testing. Its clinical trial protocol for ALS patients has been accepted by Japan's regulator PMDA, and the trial is intended to test text input through a communication device, with the first patient surgeries targeted for late 2026. The company is pre-commercial and operates in the brain-computer interface and medical device market, where it competes with other implantable and non-invasive neural interfaces.

If approved, JiMED would supply its implant system and related software to hospitals and specialist neurosurgical centres, working with clinicians and patient groups through the trial phase.
