Boundary Labs raises $2M pre-seed to build verifiable institutional stablecoin

What's the deal? Boundary Labs has raised $2M in pre-seed funding led by Galaxy Ventures to build USBD, a stablecoin designed for institutional use. The company's pitch centres on "verifiability" — giving institutions cryptographic proof that reserves back the token, rather than relying on periodic attestations.

Why now? The stablecoin market has exploded past $200B in circulation, yet most institutional players remain wary. The core issue: trust. Traditional stablecoins rely on monthly or quarterly attestations from auditors, leaving gaps where reserves could be mismanaged without anyone knowing. Boundary Labs argues that zero-knowledge or similar cryptographic proof methods can close that gap in real time.

Regulatory momentum also helps. Lawmakers in the US and EU are actively drafting stablecoin frameworks, and projects that can demonstrate transparent, verifiable reserves are better positioned to meet incoming compliance standards.

What could go wrong? The verifiable-reserve concept is technically ambitious and largely unproven at scale. Cryptographic proof systems are complex, and institutional buyers may still prefer the comfort of familiar audit processes over novel technology — at least initially.

Competition is fierce. Circle's USDC and Tether's USDT dominate the market, and both are investing heavily in transparency and institutional partnerships. A $2M pre-seed gives Boundary Labs limited runway to build, launch, and win trust before better-funded rivals absorb similar features.

The signal: Galaxy Ventures' involvement is notable — the firm is the venture arm of Galaxy Digital, one of the most active institutional crypto investors, signalling that demand for verifiable reserve infrastructure is coming directly from the institutional side of the market. With stablecoin circulation past $200B and regulatory frameworks crystallising on both sides of the Atlantic, the race to build compliance-ready, cryptographically transparent stablecoins is moving from whitepaper theory to funded reality, even at the pre-seed stage.
