Shanda Games, an online game developer, operator, and publisher offering massively multiplayer online games and mobile games for its users MoreLess
Shanda Games originated as the core gaming unit of Shanda Interactive Entertainment, a company established in December 1999 by Chen Tianqiao, his wife Chrissy Luo, and his brother Chen Danian. Chen Tianqiao, an economics graduate from Fudan University, had prior experience in a securities firm and property development before venturing into the internet space. Starting with just $60,000, the founders initially focused on online cartoons and communities before pivoting to gaming. A critical early move was using their remaining $300,000 in startup funds in 2001 to license the South Korean massively multiplayer online (MMO) game, "Legend of Mir II," for the Chinese market. The game's success was rapid, turning a profit within two months and laying the foundation for the company's dominance.
The company's business model revolves around developing, operating, and publishing online games for a diverse user base, primarily in China but also in overseas markets. Shanda Games pioneered the "freemium" model in China, shifting from a pay-to-play to a free-to-play structure in 2005. This model allows users to play games for free and generates revenue through the sale of virtual items and other in-game services. The company operates a portfolio of games that includes in-house developed titles, co-developed games, and titles licensed from third parties. Its offerings have spanned popular MMOs like "The World of Legend" and licensed titles such as "MapleStory," "AION," and "Final Fantasy XIV" in mainland China.
A significant milestone was the IPO of the parent company, Shanda Interactive Entertainment, on the NASDAQ (SNDA) in May 2004, which was the largest US IPO for a Chinese internet firm at the time. As the parent company diversified, the gaming unit, Shanda Games, was spun off and had its own successful IPO on NASDAQ (GAME) in 2009, raising $1.04 billion. Over the years, the company underwent significant structural changes. Founder Chen Tianqiao sold his stake in Shanda Games in 2014 and transformed the parent, Shanda Group, into a private investment firm. Shanda Games was subsequently taken private in a merger completed in November 2015. Later, in 2017, the Shanda Games brand was acquired by Zhejiang Century Huatong Group and was rebranded to Shengqu Games in 2019.
