Crusoe Secures $11.6 Billion to Support OpenAI-Linked Data Center in Texas
Crusoe, a US-based AI infrastructure firm, has raised $11.6 billion in a combination of debt and equity to develop a large-scale data centre campus in Abilene, Texas. The facility is part of OpenAI’s broader “Stargate” initiative, which aims to expand the company’s computing capacity through a distributed network of data centres across the United States. The funding was led by Blue Owl Capital’s Real Assets platform and Primary Digital Infrastructure.
Located within the Lancium Clean Campus, the Abilene site is designed to eventually support eight buildings with a combined power capacity of 1.2GW. Construction of the initial phase—two buildings totalling over 200MW—began in mid-2024 and is expected to be operational by early 2025. A second phase, launched in March 2025, will add six more buildings and is slated for completion by mid-2026.
Each building will be capable of housing up to 50,000 Nvidia GB200 NVL72 units, with direct-to-chip liquid cooling and closed-loop water systems to improve energy efficiency. The project reflects a growing shift in AI infrastructure development towards dedicated, high-capacity sites, as organisations like OpenAI seek alternatives to existing cloud providers to meet escalating computational demands.
