BBVA Spark hits €1.5B committed, hires Sonya Iovieno to lead European expansion
What's the deal? BBVA SparkDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, the Spanish bank's unit for high-growth tech companies, has committed €1.5 billion in financing and named Sonya Iovieno as head of venture and growth lending for Europe. The appointment strengthens its specialist team as it pushes beyond Spain and Latin America into the broader European market.
Who's joining? Iovieno brings more than 15 years of experience working with innovative, high-growth companies in the European ecosystem. Her hire anchors a new growth phase for BBVA Spark, which aims to become a leading financial partner for the continent's tech companies.
By the numbers: BBVA Spark now serves nearly 2,000 customers, around 500 of which have financing. It operates in five countries — Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Spain and the UK — with offices in Barcelona, Madrid, London, Mexico City, Bogotá and Buenos Aires.
What's the endgame? Launched four years ago, BBVA Spark offers services ranging from day-to-day operations support to structured financing, plus capital call facilities for venture capital funds. "Europe is experiencing a genuine industrial renaissance," said Santiago Muguruza, global head of BBVA Spark, pointing to advances in robotics, artificial intelligence and quantum computing.
Why Barcelona? The city hosted the BBVA Spark Summit for a fourth year, drawing more than 200 startups and 100 investors from 70 funds managing over €55 billion. Catalonia accounts for 45% of BBVA Spark's business in Spain and nearly 14% of its global portfolio, with clients including Exoticca, Worldsensing, Paack and Payflow.
The signal: European venture debt remains active but selective, with 2025 deal value down about 31% from 2024's record as capital favored larger, later-stage firms. Against established players such as HSBC Innovation BankingDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, BBVA's hire signals a bid to build specialist capacity — not yet proof of a leading position.
