Mistral AI buys SkipLabs in its fifth acquisition of 2026

What's the deal? Mistral AI has acquired SkipLabs, a French startup building tools to make AI code generation faster, more reliable, and more secure. The deal value was undisclosed. It marks the French generative AI company's fifth acquisition of 2026.

Who is SkipLabs? Founded six years ago with offices in Paris and London, the startup was created by Julien Verlaguet, a former Meta engineer of nearly nine years. His team of engineers and scientists will join that of Guillaume Lample, Mistral's chief scientist and cofounder.

Why now? The purchase follows four earlier deals this year: cloud firm KoyebDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → in February, industrial AI company Emmi AIDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → in May, advertising specialist PimentoDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → in September, and AI user-experience tool maker New MaterialDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → in October. Together they extend Mistral beyond building large language models alone.

What's the endgame? By acquiring across varied fields, Mistral is strengthening its technology stack and vertical integration — infrastructure, specialised skills, and solution design — to make its models easier for enterprises to deploy. It has signed partnerships with BMW, Airbus, CMA CGM, and TotalEnergies.

SkipLabs fits that push. "With AI, the author is no longer a person. This challenges many of the assumptions these tools rest on, and that is exactly what is exciting: we can reinvent them from scratch," Verlaguet said (translated from French).

The funding backdrop: Mistral is drawing on heavy fundraising. Its September round, led by Samsung with ASMLDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and Nvidia, raised €3 billion at a valuation of €21 billion.

The company has not abandoned the model race. In early October it unveiled Mistral Large 4, which it calls the best open-weight model in Europe and the US, strong in cybersecurity, finance, and industrial use cases.

The signal: Mistral's acquisition spree shows a European challenger moving beyond pure model competition with OpenAI and AnthropicDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. The bet is that owning infrastructure, talent, and tooling — not just models — is what wins enterprise customers.
