Ex-Google engineers' chip startup Tenspresso eyes $50M at $500M valuation

What's the deal? TenspressoDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a Sunnyvale, California-based AI chip startup founded by former Google engineers, is in talks to raise at least $50 million in a round that would value it at $500 million, according to people familiar with the matter.

Who's involved? Co-founders Dong Hyuk Woo and Harshit Khaitan previously worked on Google's tensor processing units. The 15-person startup raised $20 million from Striker Venture PartnersDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → weeks earlier, after which Altimeter Capital Management approached it about another investment.

What's the endgame? Tenspresso is building chips for AI workloads that need longer context windows, letting models process more information for complex tasks. It aims to complete its first product design in late 2027 or early 2028 while exploring supply options outside the traditional silicon chain.

Why now? The round's size could still change as talks with strategic investors continue. Analysts project bottlenecks in advanced packaging, high-bandwidth memory, and leading-edge manufacturing capacity through 2027.

What could go wrong? The valuation is a bet on execution well ahead of product or commercial proof. Tenspresso is only months old, has no disclosed customer, and its first chip is not expected until 2027 at the earliest.

The signal: The talks come amid a surge of capital into AI-chip companies, with far larger financings reported for established challengers like Groq and Tenstorrent. Tenspresso's valuation reflects investors' appetite for experienced chip teams and specialized inference hardware — not evidence that it is yet a meaningful Nvidia competitor.
