Zijin takes control of Chifeng Gold as stock hits second straight limit-up

What's the deal? Zijin Mining GroupDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has acquired control of Chifeng GoldDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, taking a 25.85% stake on October 22 to become its controlling shareholder. The move drove Chifeng's A-shares (600988.SH) to a second consecutive 10% limit-up, with the stock sealing the ceiling at 9:57 on US$2.35B turnover. The deal value was not disclosed.

What's the endgame? Zijin acquired the stake through an A-share transfer and an H-share subscription. The buyer says the move will expand its gold resource holdings, complete its gold supply chain and generate industrial synergies.

Why now? Gold rallied sharply in early November, breaking key round numbers, as US rate-cut expectations rose and the dollar softened. Chifeng's Hong Kong-listed shares (06693.HK) jumped 18.15% on November 4 alongside the A-share limit-up.

The backdrop: Central banks added 321 tonnes of gold in the third quarter, up 42% year over year, according to the World Gold Council — the highest quarterly total since the fourth quarter of 2024. The Council links the buying to reserve diversification and risk management as prices sit at historic highs.

What could go wrong? Chifeng's nine-month revenue rose 16.69% to US$1.39B and net profit climbed 11.05% to US$314.2M, but third-quarter net profit fell 41.84% year over year. Analysts attribute the squeeze to timing gaps in output, ore grade and settlement, plus intermediary and financial costs booked from the takeover. The full-year gains rested largely on a strong first half.

The signal: Beyond a routine gold-price trade, the rally reflects repricing around a takeover that hands Chifeng a major mining parent. Whether Zijin's management can lift Chifeng's output and cost structure — and convert resource gains into sustainable profit — remains the core valuation question.
