Anthropic pays for news for the first time, licensing AP election data for Claude

What's the deal? Anthropic has signed its first paid content licensing deal with a news publisher, the Associated PressDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, AdweekDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → reported, citing two people familiar with the matter. The agreement let Claude surface real-time, attributed AP election data during the US midterms. Neither company disclosed the price, duration, or scope, and neither commented on the record.

Why now? Anthropic had announced earlier this autumn that Claude would begin showing "up-to-date results on election night and in the days that follow." The AP deal gave it a credible source for that live data just as voters went to the polls.

What led up to it: Until now, Anthropic had treated web scraping as fair use and declined the licensing talks that OpenAI and Google pursued. Publishers spent two years blocking AI crawlers to force those negotiations — what one Adweek reporter called "effectively a digital embargo." Election Night exposed the cost of relying on whatever the open web left available.

The context: OpenAI has signed more than a dozen publisher agreements; Google said in October that more than 400 publications were participating in its licensing program. The AP was the first publisher to license content to both companies, so this adds another major AI platform to its commercial relationships.

What's unresolved: It is unclear whether this is a narrow election-window arrangement or the first step of a broader publisher strategy. Adweek noted that one deal does not necessarily signal a wholesale reversal.

The signal: Paid AI-news partnerships are spreading, and the holdout among major labs has now paid. Every publisher sitting on current data — on markets, sports, or breaking news — has a reported precedent to cite in the next round of talks.
