Try Dealroom →, BlueOrchard Microfinance Fund, and ILX Funds joined the five-year loan. FMO said 30% of proceeds will target green finance, with the rest supporting micro and small businesses, including women-, youth-, rural, and agriculture-led enterprises.
Why it stands out: At $172 million, the deal ranks among the larger development-finance facilities for a Mongolian bank. Nearly half is denominated in local currency — an $80 million tugrik tranche funded by FMO — which is rare for international lending into the country. That lets Khan Bank extend long-term loans to farmers and small firms without passing on currency risk.
Why now? The facility caps a rapid build-up of development lending through Khan Bank. The EBRDDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → signed a separate $130 million green loan in October — its first private-sector investment in Mongolia. The tugrik tranche is twice the local-currency component of FMO's $200 million Khan Bank facility in 2025.
Who's involved: Khan Bank, an FMO client since 2009, serves 84% of Mongolia's population across 529 branches. It introduced green lending in 2015, issued Mongolia's first green bond in 2023 and first social bond in 2024, and targets green lending at 10% and gender-focused lending at 15% of its portfolio by end-2026. Impact Fund Denmark is a first-time lender to the bank.
The signal: International lenders are increasingly using Mongolia's biggest banks as channels to fund green projects and smaller businesses. A FinDev CanadaDealroom has a profile for this one.
