UNC's $2M SpaceX bet helps endowment return 37.8%, lifting assets to $17B

What's the deal? The University of North Carolina's investment fund returned 37.8% in the fiscal year ended June 30, roughly double the 18.9% median for large endowments — and about half of that gain came from a SpaceX stake it first bought in 2009.

Why now? SpaceX listed on the Nasdaq on June 12, raising $86.25 billion at a $1.78 trillion valuation. That cemented years of paper gains for early backers like UNC Management Company, which invests on behalf of the 17 institutions in the North Carolina university system.

The backstory: UNC's windfall traces to a $2 million check written in 2009 through Founders Fund, when Elon Musk's rocket company was worth about $500 million. UNC has since sold roughly $1 billion of SpaceX shares and still holds a stake worth more than $1 billion.

By the numbers: The fund's assets under management jumped to around $17 billion from $12.5 billion a year earlier. Stripping out SpaceX, the rest of the portfolio still returned about 19%.

What's the endgame? UNC credits its structure for the result. "Our ability to withstand market volatility is greatly enhanced by the fact that we have a perpetual time horizon," said Stefan Strein, president and chief investment officer of UNC Management Company.

What could go wrong? Concentration cuts both ways. SpaceX shares have since slipped slightly below their $150 opening price. Not everyone backed the bet early on: former UNC-Chapel Hill chancellor Holden Thorp said he opposed increasing exposure around 2009, doubting the capital-intensive company could raise enough to survive.

The signal: UNC's result shows how a single early-stage private bet can dominate a fund's annual performance. SpaceX's June IPO lifted other university portfolios too, including Washington University's 37.3%, Stanford's 31.7%, and Harvard's 27.1% — a reminder of how much top endowments now lean on illiquid, venture-style investments.
