Valor raises $3.3B for its largest-ever flagship fund

What's the deal? Antonio Gracias' Valor Equity Partners has raised about $3.3 billion for its flagship venture capital fund, according to new securities filings. The Chicago-based firm, long allied with Elon Musk, plans to invest in startups as it builds on its early bet on SpaceX.

Why now? It has been a banner year for Valor. In September, the firm returned about $8.5 billion worth of SpaceX shares to investors — its biggest investment win ever — after SpaceX went public in June.

What's the endgame? The $3.3 billion haul is Valor's largest core fund to date, up from the $2.35 billion flagship fund it closed in 2024. Gracias first backed SpaceX in 2008 and had put more than $400 million into the company by 2021.

The track record: Gracias was introduced to Musk by law school classmate David Sacks and invested in Tesla in 2005. He personally owns about 87 million SpaceX shares through his Valor stake, the bulk of his roughly $19.9 billion fortune.

What could go wrong? A strong raise is no guarantee of repeat returns. Valor's distinctive draw rests heavily on its SpaceX win, which may be hard to replicate.

The signal: Fundraising is rebounding, but capital is flowing disproportionately to established managers and larger funds while smaller firms struggle. Valor's step up shows how that strength is concentrating among proven names.
