New fund

Schroders brings emerging-markets debt fund to Solana via Centrifuge

What's the deal? Schroders, a global asset manager overseeing $1.1 trillion, is launching an emerging-markets debt fund on the Solana blockchain in partnership with tokenization platform Centrifuge. It is the firm's first fund on the chain. The fund size was not disclosed.

How it works: The product is legally structured as a feeder fund with an onchain share class, investing in the Schroders Emerging Markets Bond Fund. Investors hold tokenized shares of the feeder fund rather than owning the underlying bonds directly.

Why it matters: Most tokenized assets to date have been cash-like products such as US Treasury and money-market funds. Emerging-markets debt pushes tokenization into a riskier, more complex asset class.

The context: Schroders joins a wider move beyond cash products. New York Life Investment Management recently brought a high-yield bond strategy onchain with Centrifuge, while Janus Henderson and Centrifuge launched a Nasdaq-100 fund on Stellar.

What could go wrong? The launch creates a new distribution channel, but demand and liquidity for the product remain to be proven.

The signal: Traditional asset managers are testing whether blockchain rails can distribute increasingly complex strategies, not just park cash. Schroders' entry signals growing institutional comfort with onchain funds, with uptake still the open question.
