1248 Holdings buys out Generate Capital's stake in fiber operator Ubiquity

Why now? The buyout follows Ubiquity's sale of its California and Arizona network assets earlier this year, leaving a tighter Texas-and-Nebraska footprint. 1248 says it will add capital for growth, including continued investment in FiberFirst.

What changes? Operations continue without interruption, but leadership is new. Greg Dial, Ubiquity's former chief revenue officer, becomes chief executive officer; Sean Tokic takes over as chief financial officer and Pankaj Gulati as chief operating officer.

"We have been partners with Ubiquity since the beginning and continue to believe in the core business model and the Ubiquity team," said Christian Scharosch, managing director at 1248 Holdings.

Generate Capital, an energy and infrastructure investor founded in 2014, exits. "Generate Capital is proud of what Ubiquity has accomplished," said Laxman Ramu, a managing director at the firm.

The signal: Fiber consolidation is brisk, with 41 US fiber M&A deals through September 2026 and strategic buyers leading activity. With construction costs rising, buying networks is increasingly cheaper than building them — and this deal hands a focused operator a committed backer for its remaining footprint.
