Bilt buys sports loyalty firm LAVA for $300M, pushing past housing
What's the deal? Bilt, the neighborhood commerce and rewards platform, has acquired LAVA, a loyalty and customer-engagement technology company, in a transaction valued at $300 million. The deal brings LAVA's relationships with 56 professional sports franchises — across the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and MLS — into Bilt's network.
What each side brings: Bilt connects more than 7 million members across residential communities with over 50,000 merchant partners. LAVA supplies technology that lets sports teams and venues recognize fans, manage loyalty programs, and deliver real-time offers, using more than 300 adapters that plug into existing point-of-sale, ticketing, and payments systems.
What's the endgame? The strategy rests on a simple idea: communities are defined not only by where people live, but by the teams they support. Bilt plans to combine its AI agents with LAVA's real-time engagement technology to coordinate personalized benefits across businesses.
"Sports have an extraordinary ability to bring people together, yet the relationship between teams, fans, and their neighborhoods has barely been tapped," said Ankur Jain, founder and chief executive officer of Bilt.
Why now? The purchase caps a run of expansion. In September, Bilt acquired multifamily technology platform Livly, adding smart-building tools to its housing offering; LAVA extends the reach from residents and local merchants into teams, venues, and live events.
What could go wrong? The bet is that linking these audiences through shared identity and rewards produces real cross-selling. Franchise reach alone does not prove the technology's value or justify the price, and whether the combined networks deliver better economics remains to be demonstrated.
The signal: Bilt is reframing itself from a housing rewards app into a broader commerce network built on loyalty infrastructure. "We have an opportunity to redefine how loyalty works, not just on game day, but throughout everyday life," said Wen Miao, co-founder of LAVA.
