Popcorn raises $1M to build an Arabic-first AI filmmaking platform
What's the deal? Dubai-based PopcornDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, an AI-native video production startup, has raised $1 million in an angel round led by Emirati serial entrepreneur and investor Mohammed Bin Bouta Alharsoosi. The company, founded by Egyptian entrepreneurs Shady Essam and Mohamed Hedar, plans to use the capital for technology development, product expansion, and growth across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt.
What's the endgame? Popcorn bundles scripting, voiceover, visual generation, lip-sync, and post-production into one platform, so creators do not need to stitch together multiple disconnected tools. Its distinctive bet is Arabic-language content, including native Arabic lip-sync and support for regional dialects — a gap in the global AI video market.
Why now? AI is reshaping the economics of video production, collapsing work that once needed crews, equipment, and weeks of planning. "Our ambition isn't to replace filmmakers," said Essam, co-founder and chief executive officer. "It's to remove the barriers between imagination and execution."
What could go wrong? At $1 million, Popcorn's raise sits in the bottom third of early-stage deals by size. It competes in a capital-intensive sector where Runway raised $315 million in February 2026 and Higgsfield pulled in $400 million in its August Series B, plus later backing from Nvidia and TCV.
The signal: Popcorn is not notable for the size of its cheque but for where it is pointing it. Its bet is that localisation and end-to-end tooling can carve out a durable regional niche in a market dominated by far better-funded global platforms.
