Fibraterre raises €1.8 million to scale wheat straw insulation

What's the deal? FibraterreDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a Normandy startup that makes binder-free wheat straw insulation panels, has raised a €1.8 million seed round (about $2 million) to build its first industrial unit. UTC Alumni and SideAngelsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → co-led, with Normandie ParticipationsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and Bpifrance also investing.

What's the endgame? The company wants to move its low-carbon, locally sourced insulation out of pilot production and into mainstream and historic buildings. By 2030, it aims to turn 3,000 tonnes of wheat straw a year into insulation panels.

What the panels are: Semi-rigid thermal and acoustic insulation made entirely from wheat straw, cold-compressed without resin or glue and stitched to hold together. Fibraterre designed them for timber-frame cavity fill and for external insulation under render or cladding.

Where the money goes: The proceeds will fund five priorities: deploying the first industrial unit, scaling continuous production, building a distributor network within two years, advancing certifications and insurability, and securing long-term partnerships with farmers.

Why now? Fibraterre points to RE2020, France's environmental building regulation, and the Décret Tertiaire, which targets energy use in commercial buildings, as tailwinds for lower-carbon materials. RE2020 extends to more building categories in 2026 and increasingly weighs whole-life carbon.

What could go wrong? Certification is a stated use of funds, and no recent third-party certifications appear in public sources. "What convinced us is a team that has already done the hardest part," said Samuel Norych of SideAngels and Paul-Victor Duquaire of UTC Alumni (translated from French).

The signal: The round ranks modestly by size, in roughly the 34th percentile. The wider insulation industry is investing in capacity at a different scale — KnaufDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →'s €120 million-plus mineral-wool line, for one — so the significance is less the raise than whether Fibraterre can manufacture and sell a consistent product reliably.
