ACROVE buys fortune-telling content firm Zappallas to boost e-commerce loyalty

What's the deal? Japanese e-commerce company ACROVE has acquired Zappallas, a Tokyo-based provider of digital fortune-telling content, buying all shares on October 31. The deal value was not disclosed. Zappallas, founded in 2000, runs more than 100 fortune-telling titles and offers real-time chat and phone readings, plus content and APIs to other companies.

What's the endgame? ACROVE runs two main businesses: a commerce transformation unit that helps clients grow e-commerce sales, and an e-commerce roll-up unit that buys and builds brands. It plans to fold Zappallas's content into both, using fortune-telling to deepen customer engagement and repeat purchasing.

Why now? ACROVE frames the move around rising customer-acquisition costs and crowded competition in e-commerce, where repeat sales are hard to win. It argues fortune-telling, popular across generations, can lower the psychological barrier to buying and build emotional ties to brands.

Chief executive officer Shunsuke Arai said combining Zappallas's content with ACROVE's e-commerce businesses would deliver "innovative customer experiences" (translated from Japanese). The company wants to blend purchase data with fortune-telling's emotional pull into what it calls "personalised marketing."

What could go wrong? The fit is strategic rather than a standard consolidation of online retailers, and the commercial payoff is unproven. Whether fortune-telling content reliably lifts customer lifetime value remains untested.

The signal: The deal extends ACROVE's acquisition-led growth — 18 M&A transactions in roughly three years, six of them business-succession deals. With 260 employees as of March 2026, the company is betting that unconventional content, not price or ad spend, is the next lever for e-commerce loyalty.
