Samsung to buy $960M stake in China's TCL China Star from affiliate

What's the deal? Samsung ElectronicsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →' board has authorized the acquisition of a 10.16% equity interest in TCL China Star Optoelectronics Technology for $960,372,347. The shares will be bought from affiliate Samsung Display in an off-market deal, with payment scheduled for December 2026.

What's the endgame? Samsung Electronics says the purpose is "to strengthen strategic cooperation." TCL China Star is a Chinese display maker, and the stake moves the holding from Samsung's panel affiliate to the parent electronics group.

Why now? The board resolved the transaction on October 29, 2026, and disclosed it the following day. The $960 million figure was converted from US$1.07B using a rate of US$1.11 per dollar, and may shift with exchange rates at payment.

What could go wrong? Share counts and per-share price were not disclosed, as the target is a limited liability company under Chinese law. Samsung also noted the terms "may change" during the course of the transaction.

The signal: The move keeps a strategic display asset inside the Samsung group while shifting it to the parent company's balance sheet. It is a related-party reshuffle rather than an outright takeover — Samsung ends up with a minority stake, not control.
