Toronto's Beacon acquires Seattle farmworker payroll startup Ganaz

What's the deal? Toronto-based Beacon Holdings has acquired Ganaz, a Seattle startup providing payroll and HR software for agricultural workers and employers. Co-founder and chief executive officer Hannah Freeman announced the deal on LinkedIn on October 28, 2026. Terms were not disclosed.

What does Ganaz do? Founded in 2017, the public benefit corporation offers onboarding, training, communication, and analytics tools. It also issues a Mastercard payroll card that gives unbanked workers digital banking access, letting employers skip paper checks and workers avoid check-cashing and remittance fees.

As of 2023, it served more than 250,000 agricultural workers in the US and Mexico and 100 employers.

Who's the buyer? Beacon buys software businesses serving traditional industries and provides shared technology and operational resources. As of September, its portfolio spanned 45 software businesses. Freeman said Ganaz "is in great hands" and praised Beacon for "building momentum for our next exciting season."

The founder exits. Freeman is stepping away to "catch my breath, spend more time with my daughter, and dream about what's next." She did not say whether Ganaz will continue as a subsidiary or whether its roughly 17 employees will receive offers from Beacon.

What could go wrong? The deal leaves key questions open. Without a disclosed price or clear plans for the business and its staff, the outcome for Ganaz's customers and workforce remains uncertain.
