Ex-Groww team launches Onto with $1M to refund travellers when hotel prices drop
What's the deal? Onto, a Bengaluru travel startup founded by former Groww professionals Jagdeep Singh and Shubham Goyal, has launched with $1 million in pre-seed funding. The round was led by Stargazer FundDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and co-led by Singapore-based White Venture CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →.
What's the product? Onto's first offering, Price Drop Refund, tracks hotel prices after a booking and automatically refunds the difference if the same room and dates become cheaper. It also covers eligible reservations made on other platforms, which travellers upload to the app for monitoring.
What's the endgame? The company will use the capital to expand operations, strengthen its technology and build new products. The founders plan to move beyond hotels and add AI features that recommend options based on a traveller's preferences and past behaviour.
"The travel industry is built around transactions, so the moment you pay, everyone stops caring," said Singh. "We started Onto to be the platform that stays on your side after you book."
By the numbers: Onto says its app recorded more than 2,000 downloads before launch. The company claims one in two bookings resulted in an automatic refund, though it did not specify the sample size or observation period.
What could go wrong? Price protection is not new in India — platforms such as ixigo and EaseMyTripDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → already offer claim-based guarantees. Onto's automation and cross-platform coverage are its differentiators, but its reach and the service's practical value remain unproven.
The signal: The round is an early, modest bet on improving the hotel-booking experience rather than a late-stage scale-up. Onto is wagering that staying useful after checkout — not just at the point of sale — can win loyalty in a crowded travel market.
