Virent Capital backs enrollment marketer Kanahoma to build a student-recruitment platform
What's the deal? Kanahoma, a San Diego-based higher-education marketing agency, has taken a strategic investment from private equity firm Virent Capital. The deal, announced October 27, 2026, will fund broader enrollment services and investments in people, technology, and capabilities. Terms were not disclosed.
What's the endgame? Founded in 2020 by former university chief marketing officer Seth Odell, Kanahoma has grown to nearly 50 full-time staff and serves more than 20 institutions nationwide. It plans to invest in data analytics, artificial intelligence, and technology to connect marketing more closely with enrollment strategy and execution. The aim: a single platform that helps colleges attract and enroll the right students.
The key hire: Chip Paucek, co-founder and former chief executive officer of online-education platform 2U, joins as co-chairman of Kanahoma's board. Odell stays on as CEO and retains significant ownership. Paucek brings experience scaling what the company calls "the largest platform in online higher education."
Why now? "Enrollment has never mattered more to colleges and universities," said Connor McMahan, founder and managing partner of Virent Capital. The signal: The deal reflects consolidation across higher-education enrollment marketing. EducationDynamicsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → acquired UK-based Net Natives in June 2026, and EABDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → bought marketing firm Hybrid earlier this year to add AI-enabled capabilities. Kanahoma's partnership is smaller than those acquisitions, but its push into analytics, AI, and enrollment services fits the same shift toward data-driven recruitment.
